Avoiding One Dimensional Style And The Fashion Rut

Avoiding One Dimensional Style And The Fashion Rut

Are you in a fashion rut? Do you find  yourself gravitating to the same color schemes day after and wearing the same look in the same way as if you are on an episode of Groundhog Day? Are you afraid to venture outside the box in order to create a new look or a new image? If you answered yes to these questions then odds are you are in a fashion rut. At one time or another, I think that we have all been there for whatever reason. For some, it may be a matter of not enough time in the day. For others it may be a matter of knowing how to mix it up.

Step back and take a look inside your closet. Is there one color that dominates the real estate there? If the answer is yes, then make a vow that you will not allow yourself to purchase a new garment in that color for a specified amount of time. If you have found yourself in a fashion rut, step one in getting out of that rut is to add additional colors to  your wardrobe selection. It may be hard at first, but if you find yourself picking up that color during your shopping trips, look for that garment in an alternate color.  On the flip side, if you look in your closet and there are certain colors that are absent then they need to be immediately added to your shopping list.

Shop With a Purpose

Shop With a Purpose

After you have established your fashion rut and the need to get out of it, you are ready  to establish a game plan and hit the store. In the beginning, you may need to shop with a list in order to avoid falling back into your rut. The first item on your list should be to avoid the color in your closet that created your rut to begin with. Next, add a list of items that you want to add in the colors that you have identified as missing from your fashion arsenal. Finally, make a list of stores that you normally frequent and establish a game plan for which stores to visit first. Then, add a few stores that you would normally avoid make it a point to take your time and peruse them looking for the items on your list.

Try on Something New and Fresh

Once you have your list and your color palette ready and established, then you are ready to take the final plunge. Walk into a store and  make an effort to find at  least one look in the store that you love but think I will never wear that. Once you find that then take it off the rack and try it on. If you look good in it, then buy it. If it does not quite fit your figure, repeat the exercise until you find the outfit that works best for you.

Congratulations, with a few simple choices you have taken the first steps to getting out of the fashion run. Now, the rest is up to you, and we would love for you to come back and share your adventures with us in terms of getting out of the fashion rut.
